Haiku/Senryu

I claim no great skill in writing haiku/senryu, but I’m enjoying learning to write them. It is a subtle art that requires quiet attention. Perhaps that’s what I like the most–the quiet thought that leads to haiku.  Here are a few that I’m not completely embarrassed by :) (I’ve also included a few written by my daughter Britta. They’re some of her first ones.) By the way, you can click the information button in the upper right part of the gallery to read a bit more about each of the poems.

Twenty five reps in two sets, nice and steady, adds up quickly. 23,000 pounds--is that really possible? Apparently so.

This morning the sky above Colorado Springs was crisscrossed with vapor trails, a sign that morning flights have just left for the West Coast.

On the trails of the bluff where I hike hikers, bicyclists, and equestrians have a love-hate relationship--each leaves a mark.

I saw deer tracks on the trail in Palmer Park this morning. I don't think I've ever seen an actual deer, though. They are always outside the park eating homeowners plants.

If you're in the Denver LDS temple at just the right time of evening, the stained glass at the back of the celestial room is amazing as the setting sun streams in.

Why is it that none of the dogs in the park stop at the hydrant? Chicken or the egg? Which one must leave his mark first? My dog stops at a nearby yucca instead.

There is something about early spring that awakens the poet within me. The shoots of new grass remind me that we must be content to endure winter and emerge ready for another round.

There are times when additional resolve isn't needed at the year's start, but rather at some unexpected time when life's doldrums leave our best intentions dead in the water.

On the way to St. Mary's Falls just before Christmas, time after time the stream drew me close to listen and watch the light playing off the ice.
[img src=https://auge.obenchain.us/wp-content/flagallery/haiku/thumbs/thumbs_pikes_peak.jpg]30Frozen Morning
There are a few minutes each morning in the winter, when snow is on the peak. I am rewarded with a view similar to this.
[img src=https://auge.obenchain.us/wp-content/flagallery/haiku/thumbs/thumbs_haiku_back_porch.jpg]30Back Porch
During the summer and into autumn I made a habit out of praying and meditating on our back porch. I guess I'm just not man enough to keep up the practice now that morning temperatures are below freezing.

Sometimes, I walk around my office park before I head in to my desk.

My girls finally named this cat Pumpkin. As the weather grew colder, this cat's yowling went from behind the fence to in front of our door. Not to be ignored, we finally found it a good home.
[img src=https://auge.obenchain.us/wp-content/flagallery/haiku/thumbs/thumbs_haiku_stream_bed.jpg]40Stream Bed
Coming down off the bluff in the twilight, I cross this dry stream bed. The air is cooler here and smells different. I am a person drawn naturally to the vistas offered at the top of the bluff, but this lowly spot captures my attention.

Britta wrote this one while we waded in the South Platte river in Eleven Mile Canyon.

The pleasure of experiencing summer rain, hearing it, feeling it, smelling it!

What's a dog to do when there is no one home to let him in?

When the wind blows, it carries away the birds' songs.

There seem to be a thousand clawing hands trying to steal my peace. If anxiety can't steal it, he'll try to beg it from me.

Often, we don't take even a few seconds to notice the world around us.
[img src=https://auge.obenchain.us/wp-content/flagallery/haiku/thumbs/thumbs_haiku_baduk.jpg]20Baduk
An afternoon game of baduk (go, wei chi) went from relaxing to embarrassing when a diligent friend taught me a lesson.

While I was a bit put out at the time, I should have trusted more. He did remember, though it was several weeks later.
